Thani captains are needed for Rappahannock County’s i annual “Relay for Life” event 1 which raises money to help in ( the fight against cancer. 1
This year’s event is sched- a uled for May 22-23 at the a Rappahannock County Ele- c mentary School. A meeting for team captains, and those wish- s ing to be one, will be held on a March 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the 1 Washington Baptist Church.
There are 14 team captains and organizers are hoping to surpass last year’s number of nearly 25 captains.
“Relay for Life” is a community event in which teams of 815 people from Rappahannock County take turns in the relay. One or more team members at a time walk or run the track in shifts during the night.
Teams are asked to raise money in advance of the relay so that everyone can enjoy the food and fun. Being on a team is am opportunity to get involved and make a difference in the battle against cancer.
Fourteen teams were represented at the first meeting of the “Relay for Life” team captains on Jan. 29. In addition to a video about the relay, Darleen Gallow, a new teacher at the Rappahannock schools, gave an inspirational talk as a cancer survivor of the importance of participating in this event.
Jane Johnson, Regional Vice President of the American Cancer Society, described how the money collected from the relay and other fund-raisers is used. About 40 percent goes towards cancer research; 40 percent goes to advocacy, education and service; 16.5 percent for fund-raising expenses and 3.8 percent to general management.
While team registration will continue until the day of the relay, team captains who register their teams by the March 18 meeting will receive an incentive prize. Tfeam packages will
