School budget

The final school budget may be somewhat lower than the $10.4 million adopted Monday by the supervisors after the state government adopts a budget perhaps as soon as this week. It provides for a new music teacher and salary raises for teachers.
The Farmland Protection Program allows the county to buy “conservation easements” from farmers so they can continue to farm and resist land offers from developers. The unanimous vote comes as Rappahannock increasingly is faced with development on its borders.
The purchases will be financed with “roll back” payments from farmers who take their land out of agriculture tax protection programs. McCarthy said there are also state and federal grants available and that land owners adjacent to a farm might contribute to keep a farm from developers.
The program is aimed at medium-sized working farms in the 100 acre range. The rollback payments produce about $25,000 year and there is some $100,000 now available.
