One duck that spends its summers here in Rappahannock is the Wood Duck. This cavity nester has had its ups and downs in the past 100 plus years.
The male “woodie” has been classified by many as the most beautiful duck in North America. My vote casts it in the top tier of all bird beauties.
The elegant male and his equally striking partner, who has a prominent white ring around her eye, live near woodland ponds, lakes, swamps, river bottoms, and wooded streams. The Wood Duck is shy and somewhat secretive, spending a lot of time under the cover of waterweeds, rushes, overhanging tree branches and the like.
The nest of the Wood Duck is in a tree cavity (or in mam-made boxes) or an abandoned pileated woodpecker hole. The nest location is five to 50 feet above ground. One of the wonders of the natural world that not many observe is the sight of the baby “wood
