Concerning our usual Viewtown history presentation, Danny Hitt reports the following from a recently found book, “Under Custer’s Command” by Karla Husby.
This book includes the journal accounts of her great-great grandfather, Pvt. James Avery of the Michigan Calvary. In this work, Pvt. Avery wrote over 600 words about the Battle Mountain engagement near Viewtown. The following Battle Mountain information is found on page 46 of this book:
“On July 24th the 5th and 6th Michigan moved out on a road along the side of a mountain. On our right was the high mountain and on our left was a descending slope. When we were well into the woods, we were dismounted and deployed on the left of the road and moved with it at right angles down the hill, where we found the enemy in force.
“We were in a field of brush and timber in which grew plenty of huckleberries, nice and ripe, and as we advanced, we would pick berries and then fire at the rebels, in spite of the shells which came pretty thick. We were not going past our berries with out eating our share”.
I wonder if huckleberries are still plentiful in Rappahannock County. If so, let us sample some and remember the brave soldiers that weathered shot and shell just to get a snack.
