Old time Democrats used to say that the nice thing about Republicans was they couldn’t govern, turning victory into defeat with the aplomb of a ballet dancer. Certainly President Richard M. Nixon was the model for that, after stomping George McGovern to get to the White House, he ends up leaving in a helicopter of disgrace and saving the Democrats from extinction. So now we have the Virginia Republican House of Delegates’ leadership which nearly shut down the Virginia government only to be diverted by the heroism of 17 Republicans who joined up with the Democrats to keep the Commonwealth solvent. Last month when the budget deal was announced, Virginians across the state heaved a sigh of relief and started making plans for summer in Chincoteague or Virginia Beach. Not so fast!
