The history of the Wood Duck has had interesting twists, and the future is still uncertain. In the early 1900s, unlimited shooting of ducks and the draining of swamps and wetlands threatened them to near extinction. Canada and the U.S. both closed the hunting season from the 1920s to the early 1940s for the species. The Wood Duck barely survived the drought of the 1930s and the continued draining of wetlands.
