“Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” with Russell Crowe as Captain Jack Aubrey, may be the best movie of its kind ever made.
Inspired by the Patrick O’Brian novels, “Master and Commander” derives its title and plot from two O’Brian novels in that brilliant author’s 20-book series about dashing Jack Aubrey of Lord Nelson’s British Navy and his friend and ship’s physician Dr. Stephen Maturin, roles played to perfection by Crowe and Paid Bettany.
The Rappahannock Association for the Arts and Community brings this film to The Theatre on Gay Street, in Little Washington on Friday, May 7 at 8 p.m.
Nominated in 10 categories for an Oscar, including for Best Picture and Best Director, and taking top honors for cinematography and sound editing, this exuberant sea adventure recreates the world of the British navy circa 1805 with such detad and intensity that the sea battles become stages for personality and character.
The film centers on the spirits of two men, Captain Jack Aubrey and ship's surgeon Stephen Maturin.
