budget By Dominic Bonaiuto Rappahannock News Staff Writer RICHMOND — Weary and a little bit giddy, Virginia legislators streamed out of the capitol last Friday afternoon following their adoption of a new two-year $60 billion budget, resolving a four-month tug-of-war over taxes and spending in the commonwealth. The end result of this year’s historic General Assembly session will be an increase in some taxes — sales, cigarette, real estate record filings — and the freezing of the popular cartax phase-out to support more spending on local public schools, state colleges and universities, mental retardation services and public safety. “I bet you thought this day would never come,” joked Republican Sen. Viewtown
home A fast moving fire roared through a 100-year-old house at 27 Herman Lane in Viewtown last Wednesday leaving a couple and their two young sons homeless. J. B. Carter, chief of the Amissville Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company said that three of the seven rooms were destroyed and the rest were so heavily damaged by smoke that the house is unlivable.
