One of the hardest hit areas was down Route 647 from Flint Hill to Poe’s Road. Ellen Welch, who lives on Crest Hill Road had the storm windows on the north side of her house smashed in)j not by trees or debris^) but just the force of the wind, according to her son-in-law Richard Brady.
A tree that went down along Route 522 about 6 p.m. resulted in three cars plowing into each other. Joann Rector Jenkins, 57, Duncan Street, Front Royal complained of neck pain and was carried to Warren County Hospital. A second driver, 17years-of age of Flint Hill also complained of injury. Trooper Robert Marshall said that no charges were filed because of the storm.
Wakefield School
For headmaster Vargo at Wakefield School the storm was “actually frightening.”
“When it came through it appeared to me to be a small tornado at 5 p.m. It got very, very dark.”
He said the heavy double doors all around the school “were sucked open all at once, about 12 of them.”
He said he and Mrs. Foster Corbin, the school’s housekeeper for 21 years, ran to lock each of them so they could not move. “It was very, very windy,” he said.
“Hundreds of gallons of water came in under the doors, around window sills, and through our gym walls. The entire lower level of the school was flooded—at least two to three inches of standing water,” said Vargo.
Electrical lines that ran into the kindergarten and first grade classrooms were ripped out completely by the storm, he said. Power was finally restored completely on Monday morning. Arrest made in storm
As Friday’s storm hit, Virginia State Trooper Lee Felts stopped a vehicle driving 70 miles an hour in a 55 mile an hour zone on Route 211 West.
He clrarged the driver, James W. Hurn, 42, of Warrenton with a felony charge of driving under the influence. State Police Sgt. Gary Settle said the records showed that Hum had been convicted as a habitual DUI offender and a repeated offense is treated as a felony. Felts also charged him with car equipment violations.
