A spirited public
Yet, by far the most spirited statements on behalf of the improvements came from the public. Mattie Nawrocki, a high school junior and track hurdler with a ponytail, asserted herself on behalf of the upgraded track and the track team, which she said is sometimes forced to practice in the high school parking lot.
“We leave the track team out to dry,' Ms. Nawrocki told the room. “Nobody knows what wre do.”
And Mike Leake, a lanky banker from the Jackson District, informed listeners that “the cheerleading team practices in the hallways and the cafeteria,' and thus, an auxiliary gym “is long overdue.'
Shannon Swain, from the Wakefield District, got down to brass tacks with a popular slogan when she urged startled supervisors, “Do it! Just do it now!”
