Civil War talk
The Blue Ridge Civil War Roundtable will meet Tuesday, May 18 at the Rappahannock County Library. Frank Walker of Orange, Va., in full Civil War uniform, will speak at 7:30 p.m. on ‘The Mine Run Campaign,” the first potential confrontation between Lee and Grant following Gettysburg. Rappahannock Free Clinic
The Rappahannock Free Clinic will be open May 19 at the Rappahannock Health Department in Washington. Patient registration is 5:30-6:30 p.m. There is a shortage of nurses to assist at the clinic. Those willing to help (it is not necessary to be an RN) are urged to call the clinic at 675-2525 or 347-0394.
PEC planting at Flatwoods
The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) office in Rappahannock invites everyone to be a part of the Flatwoods’ ‘Transformation” project on Thursday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon when PEC and other volunteers will be planting at the site. Flatwoods is where residents take garbage and recycle off the Shade Road. PEC has been working with VDOT, the county and Rappahannock County High School’s building and maintenance class on this project to emphasize the importance of the natural cycle. The Rappahannock County High School drama department presents two performances of The Crucible" by Arthur Miller on Friday, May 21 and Saturday, May 22 at the high school auditorium. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the door.
Songwriters’ Festival
Hearthstone School in Sperryville will hold a “Songwriters’ Festival” to benefit the school on Saturday, May 22 from 7 to 10 p.m. An event for the whole family, the evening of song features Vyktoria Pratt Keating, Joanne Juskus, Ben Mason, Bill Abernathy, Jeff Severson and Rafael Lorenzo. Mountain Laurel Montessori School will host a Flower & Garden Show on Saturday, May 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine, at Rappahannock Cellars on the corner of Route 522 and Hume Road in Huntly. Nurseries and crafters are among the exhibitors. There will be hot air balloon rides and wine tastings and activities for children. Food and beverages will be available.
