Legislators said they were particularly pleased with the additional support for higher education.
“Kids in Fairfax are twice as likely to attend a Virginia school, so that’s an immediate impact for families,” said central Fairfax Delegate Chap Petersen (D-37th).
But the additional money only covers half of the identified shortfall in funding, and many colleges and universities are still raising tuition to cover costs. (See related story, Page A7.)
Those legislators who fought any tax increase continued their fight in vain up to the last minute.
