Norris, a recent graduate of the Guiding Eyes program, will not don a cap and gown with his classmates this year, nor will he receive a diploma. Instead, he will use his eyes to help a human in need.
Norris, who is a black male Labrador Retriever, is now fully trained to be part of a Guiding Eyes team. He is fulfilling his potential as a working guide dog with Alice Stacey in Peachtree City, Ga.
Norris was trained in Washington, Va. by Nina and Mark Shepardson, volunteer puppy raisers for Guiding Eyes for the Blind. The two began working with Norris when he was just eight weeks old.
While living with the Shepardsons, Norris was provided many different opportunities for socialization, including visits to shopping malls, train stations and restaurants. “It takes a great deal of commitment to raise a Guiding Eyes puppy” said Nina, “but I knew from the beginning that Norris was one very special puppy and I’m very proud of him and all he has accomplished.”
