Listing on the Virginia register places absolutely no restrictions on the owner’s use of the property. Registration is designed to identify historic resources and encourage, but not require, their preservation.
The board said that while the Virginia register listing does not prevent an owner from demolishing, selling, or altering a property, it does provide benefits such as technical assistance from the Department of Historic Resources and statewide recognition.
In addition, an owner of a Virginia landmark may be eligible for state and federal rehabilitation tax credit ‘ programs and may elect to donate a preservation easement on a historic property.
