AN ANGEL Angels occupy a prominent place in cemetery statuary, and with good reason. Angels originated from ancient Mesopotamia, where they were believed to possess a divine power that was communicated to them through spiritual messengers. Since then, every culture has had its version of angels. The Buddhists, Persians, and Old Testament Hebrews all gave an independent life to winged spirits that embodied humans’ highest aspirations for themselves. It was, therefore, a natural step for American Puritans, who possessed a firm conviction in the afterlife, to insist that those who died undergo a heavenly conversion into the pure flying spirit. Thus, we find angels, in one form or another, on most New England gravestones. We all conceive of angels differently, but few among us would like to be convinced that they don’t exist.
