Lyme disease was first described in the Annals of Internal Medicine in the mid 1970s by a group of Yale Rheumatology specialists who were called to Old Lyme, Conn., to clarify the apparent epidemic of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis the pediatricians were seeing in children. Their epidemiological study revealed the illness to be not JRA, but an infectious process which they called “Lyme disease” because of the location of the cases.
