Sherwood’s paintings are a wonderful fiision of a joyous use of color and composition to achieve very sensitive renderings of the land as she sees it. The landscapes exhibit all of the classical concerns of painters throughout the ages, yet the use of color and the immediacy of her response to nature are from a very modem sensibility.
Sherwood earned both her BA and MFA in painting at American University. She attended at the same time as many of the painters who later established the renowned Washington Studio School. She remembers being there with them as one of the great gifts in her life.
Sherwood’s philosophy of painting is focused on the process, not the product. As she says of her work, “color and light have always been the motivating factors in my work. The process of a visually-felt investigation of space and the relationship of masses leads me to create a visual order.”
