I believe the disease may be underreported in Virginia because the doctors are not familiar with the many presentations of this disease. If they do not think of Lyme in the differential diagnosis, they will not test for it and the patient will go undiagnosed.
Perhaps the Virginia DOH can put together an educational brochure for health professionals and another for the general population to elevate the awareness of this disease which is among us.
