orchard fields, the board said. Between 1780 and 1996 Sunnyside was continuously owned by members of the Miller family and its descendants including the Wood family. The property has been continuously used as a commercial apple orchard since 1873, when Charles Burrell Wood planted the first orchard, the board said.

The Laurel Mills Historic District, located along the Thornton River in the southeastern portion of the county, “is important for its cohesive collection of mid-to-late-19thcentury architectural resources associated with the Rappahannock Woolen Mills,” the board said.

The district’s buildings line a single road, and date from the 1840s to the early 1900s, when the mill was rebuilt after a fire. “Laurel Mills appears today much as it did when the mill closed in 1927,” the board said.
