It is this strenuous trip across the Gulf that requires the hummingbirds to “bulk up” their fat reserves. The birds are frenzied in their search for nectar, be it from flowers or feeders. This activity is what we have been observing the past few weeks.
According to Sibley’s Guide to Bird Life and Behavior, hummingbirds can double their weight in just two to three weeks with this intensive feeding. Remember, they have to do it again in six or seven months for their return flight north.
Sibley also suggests using two or more feeders (rather than one big one), and spacing them well apart. Feeders should not be within sight of each other. This spacing reduces the bird’s competition for food sources.
Gender habits
Male hummingbirds come earlier in the spring than females and establish their territories based on hopeful but brief mating encounters with female birds. Females follow a bit later, with their intent primarily focused on good nesting possibilities.
