Mundell Lowe was bom in Mississippi and left home at the age of 13 for Nashville to work in and around the Grand Ole Opry. From there he went to Bourbon Street in New Orleans, and that marked the beginning of his long and successful career as a jazz musician.

In the 1950s and 60s, Lowe lived in New York, working with Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus
