Birds the male and female hummingbirds do not form pair bonds. The males have- a simple “macho” strategy—mate with any female that comes into their territory and evict any male transgressors. The female alone does the nest-building, sometimes re-using last year’s nest.
Nesting materials are made from soft, silky items such as thistle down, Spider webs, and caterpillar silk. The nest is usually camouflaged with lichens on the outside. The female alone raises the brood, normally two, until the babies can fledge. She is the protector of her young and has been known to confront crows, snakes, jays, wrens and hawks.
What’s that noise?
We have all witnessed the diving and buzzing of the hummingbird looking for food, or chasing away other birds. Many people are also intrigued by the buzz or hum of their wings.
