Chairman, led a brief ceremony in honor of the cancer survivors that included other testimonials from cancer survivors.
Relay Begins
The first lap of the Relay began with survivors walking carrying purple balloons; their caretakers met them half way carrying pink balloons.
Survivor names were read as the Rappahannock High School Band played. “Relay* balloons were released as the survivors and caretakers completed the circuit. Afterwards the band marched the circuit followed by the cheerleaders and other youth on Relay Teams. The Relay continued with members of the 37 teams walking the track.
At 6:00 p.m. the food extravaganza began. Entertainment included line dancing, face-painting, dancing, while citizens socialized with good conversation and fun.
Rolie Polie the clown (Beth Swindler) was there and Dr. Chappell and Brian Taylor played live music.
Toward dusk, the luminaries in honor of cancer survivors and in memory of cancer victims were placed around the track. Luminaries were lit in a small ceremony led by Beverly Atkins and Mary Ann Krammas while the walking continued. Walkers frequently paused in front of the luminaries that honored their loved ones.
Pizza was served at 11 p.m. and there was also a breakfast for remaining hardy souls on Sunday morning who stayed during the Closing Ceremonies at 8 a.m.
