Project Healing Waters
Members of the Northern Virginia Chapter of Trout Unlimited recently guided three soldiers currently being treated at Walter Reed Army Hospital at Mount Vernon Farm on the Thornton River near Sperryville. The soldiers are participants in Project Healing Waters, a program that emphasizes the skills of fly fishing and fly tying to help the patients regain the use of their damaged bodies restoring them to a normal life. The program is supported by the Federation of Fly Fishers and Trout Unlimited. Three soldiers, CPL Rob Kislow, SPC J.R. Salzman, and PV2 Jeff Breezee were participated in the event each catching large rainbow trout. Prior to the trip they had received considerable training in how to use their artificial limbs to tie on flies and cast from Project Healing Waters volunteers.The group was fortified with food from Rae’s Place in Sperryville.
