The owners of the former site of Cooler’s Place west of Sperryville have a new autooriented idea for the 3-acre property.
Willie and Cathem Smith hope to sell classic cars from the 1950s to 1970s to drum up more business activity on the property, which already includes a snack bar.
The move will requires amendments to the county’s zoning ordinance. The Rappahannock County Planning Commission backed those changes at its monthly meeting on May 16.
If the amendments are approved by the County Board of Supervisors on June 4, the ordinance will allow automobile sales, repair and service in the Highway Commercial zone. The area stretches from Sperryville west to Shenandoah National Park along U.S. 211.
County Administrator John McCarthy supports the amendments.
He said there is no justification for not allowing such activities in the Highway Commercial zone. Some businesses, such as B&B Service Center, already are allowed to perform such services because they existed before the ordinance was written.
