McCarthy said.
Robert Weinberg, who represents the County Board of Zoning Appeals, said he thinks vintage car sales are a good fit for the tourist-focused strip. But other types of auto sales may not be as appropriate, he said.
Willie Smith said he plans to focus on selling classic cars, but wants to be able to sell other types of cars if he needs to increase revenue.
Smith does not plan to perform any major work on the cars. Waxing, washing and minor detailing would be inside on the site, he said.
Weinberg said the commissioners should not assume that the omission of auto sales in the ordinance is an oversight. He proposed readvertising the matter to make the auto-sales amendment specific to vintage cars.
But he received no support from the other commissioners.
Stonewall-Hawthorne District commissioner Tom Tepper said the zoning ordinance should not differentiate between types of cars. He also said more business will be good for that part of the county- tyThe
recommendation for the Board of Supervisors to approve the amendments carried 6 to 1. Weinberg was the only dissenting vote.
