The last time that Rappahannock County High School’s baseball team went to the Region B tournament:
• Gerald Ford was President.
• A gallon of gasoline was 32 cents.
• Ice cream was red, white and blue to commemorate the upcoming Bicentennial celebration.
“I think we fooled some people this season,” said Rappahannock County head coach Jeff Jenkins, who was a member of the junior varsity baseball team in the spring of 1976 when the varsity Panthers won the regional title and eventually finished as the Group A state runner up.
“With all that we lost from last year . this is a good team, a good bunch of guys, a well balanced team.”
The Panthers will face regular season district champion Strasburg Thursday night for the tournament title. The Rams scored a 6-2 win over visiting Manassas Park Tuesday night.
Should Rappahannock defeat the Rams for the district tournament title, it would host the opening round of the regional tournament Monday at Rappahannock County Elementary School.
Tuesday afternoon, the Panthers rode the left arm of senior Ethan Russell, who tossed a two-hitter and struck out 13 in Tuesday afternoon’s Bull Run District tournament semifinal 2-1 win over George Mason.
Russell, who has been a major clog in the Rappahannock machine, shook off a thirdinning liner off the bat of fellow pitcher Bryon Mendenhall that bounced off his pitching arm for
