A newspaper in Rappahannock County has been
around since 1877 when it carried the same
name as it does today - however, only for one year. Then it became The Blue Ridge Echo and later “The Call.”
In 1886, the masthead read The Blue Ridge Guide and there are some copies floating around the county from the early 1900s.
There was even a period of more than 10 years where no newspaper existed in the county.
Arthur “Nick” Arundel purchased The Rappahannock News in May of 1977.
The Times Community Papers have grown over the years to now include a cadre of more than a dozen local, weekly papers reaching over 650,000 readers in Northern Virginia and The Greater Piedmont.
The Rappahannock News nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is the furthest west with The Alexandria Times to the east, The Culpeper Times to the south and the Clarke Times Courier tn the north.
In between, there is the Fauquier Times Democrat and its latest addition The Fauquier Weekender, The Gainesville Times and the Loudoun Times Mirror.
The Fairfax Division rounds out the chain with papers serving McLean, Great Falls, Vienna, Herndon, Chantilly, Burke, Reston and more.
The staff of the Rappahannock News currently includes the editor, Anita L. Sherman, two writers, Kevin Allen and Charlie Spiering, our ad consultant Stephanie Heflin and our loyal and hardworking office manager, Jan Clatterbuck.
John Toler is the Executive Editor for the Warrenton Division which includes The Rappahannock News. John is also one of the original writers for this paper and originally served as its general manager.
In addition, the Rappahannock News' has a host of neighborhood columnists and freelancers who regularly contribute to these pages.
By far the most prolific photojoumalist is Flint Hill’s Richard Lykes whose prose and photos grace the paper nearly every week.
Rappahannock businesses continue to support The Rappahannock News with their advertising dollars and for the third year, the Rappahannock News will again publish their Rappahannock Guide during the summer.
It is with great pride that the staff and owner of the Rappahannock News celebrates this 30-year birthday and looks forward to many more years serving the community of Rappahannock C6unty.
