Rappahannock County's softball team built abig lead and survived a seventh-inning surge from Madison County on Tuesday to win their semifinal game of the Bull Run District tournament by a score of 6-3.
Th® victory puts the Panthers (14-5 overall, 10-1 district) in the district title game against Manassas Park today at Rappahannock County Elementary School.
Rappahannock got on the board in the first rnning when sophomore third baseman Amanda Smoot scored to put the Panthers up 1In
the second inning, Rappahannock struck again.
With two outs and no one on base, freshman right fielder Megan Lee connected for a single Then sophomore shortstop Emily Carter stepped up to the plate and bashed a triple to bring Lee home.
The score remained 2-0 in Rappahannock’s favor until the fifth inning, when the Panthers reeled off four runs.
Madison fielding errors allowed Smoot and sophomore second baseman Morgan Stephens to get on base. Then senior catcher Christina Naramore hit a single to score Smoot.
Next, with two outs and two runners on base, senior center fielder Rebecca Tupper crushed a triple. Tupper then stole home on a pitch that got past Madison’s catcher.
By the time it was all said and done, the Panthers had finished the fifth inning up 6-0.
But the Mountaineers mounted a valiant, comeback attempt in the top of the seventh inning.
Madison posted three runs and managed to load the bases with the score at 6-3. But Rappahannock held strong and closed out the inning to earn a date in the district tournament championship game.
