Sperryville on Memorial Day weekend on both Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until about 5 p.m. Cliff Miller and Mt. Vernon Farm are hosting the first Sperryville Stock Dog Trial. This event features Border Collies doing what they were bred to do - herd sheep. The Border Collie has been herding sheep on the hills of Scotland and England for a very long time. It is the most efficient way for a shepherd to gather and move a flock of sheep. The history of sheep dog trials goes back over 100 years. Handlers use voice and whistle commands to work with the dogs to move a small packet of sheep around an obstacle course. The course is intended to test dogs with work they would be expected to do on. a working sheep farm. The dogs will gather the sheep, drive them away from the handler and, depending on the class, move the sheep across the field, and put the sheep in a pen. The most experienced dogs must separate one sheep from the pack.
