The Texas longhorn is a hybrid breed resulting from a random mixing of Spanish retinto (criollo) stock and English cattle that Anglo-American frontiersmen brought to Texas from southern and Midwestern states in the 1820s and 1830s
Longhorns have incredibly long productive life spans. Many live past 20 years of age with some living past age 25 or 30.
Praised for their elaborate horn measurements, Washington resident Roger Andrews likes his because they make good pets.
Andrews started raising the Longhorns in 1998. He bought them locally from Ben Gravette of Warrenton. As far as he knows Mr. Gravette is still in business.
Tbday, Andrews has three babies left.
The Texas Longhorns come in a variety of colors and patterns. You’D find brown, black, white, yellow, red, speckles, patches, and solids. Except perhaps for the solid ones, no two Longhorns look alike.
Andrews said, “ the best thing is waiting to see what color the babies turn out to be.”
Some ranchers keep Longhorns for their easy calving. A Longhorn cow will often go off on her own to a safe place to have the calf then bring it home. They are also known to hide their calves in safe places to avoid predation.
Most breeds of cattle fall into either beef or dairy. The Texas longhorn is more of a beef animal and is known for its lean beef which is lower in fat and overall calories than most beef
Andrews said that his three cattle would never go to the slaughter, but will live there on his place rent free. They are quiet animals. They would rather eat from the trees than grass.
The Longhorns would be in the field minding their own business and cars would go by and stop to watch them.
However, they continue to represent the romance of the Old West and for Roger Andrews, his Longhorns retained for their beauty and attract the tourist that drive by in their cars.
Andrews noted that these Longhorns never attempt to leave. “They have it made cm this place.”
