Rappahannock rallied from a 1-0 deficit with its two runs in the third. With one out, Settle walked. Jonathan Butler followed with a single up the middle to put runners at first and second. Jenkins went to his bench and inserted C. J. Ray as a courtesy runner for Settle. Bobby Czekaj singled. On the play, Crawford was thrown out trying to score, while Czekaj and Butler moved to second and third, respectively.
Russell then hit a bouncer to George Mason first baseman Derek Blodgett, who elected to go home with his throw, which was not in time to nab Butler.
“That was a huge mental error” Miller added.
Said Russell, “I turned and saw the ball bounce in from of the catcher. I was hoping Jonathan was safe.”
With runners at the comers and Adam Gessner at the plate, Mendenhall caught Russell off first base. During the rundown, Czekaj broke and scored. Russell was tagged out, but Rappahannock had a 2-1 lead.
The Mustangs scored an unearned run in the third. Piscopo and Mendenhall each reached base on infield errors. Prewitt’s sacrifice moved the runners in scoring position. A passed ball allowed Piscopo to cross the plate with a 1-0 lead.
“We made three errors in that first inning, and I told our guys that no matter who starts this off and scores, it’s going to be a dose game,” Jenkins said.
