The P&nthers varsity boys soccer team shut out Clarke County last night with a score of 2-0.
“They've worked hard all season and they deserve it,” said head varsity coach Shay Bell.
The Panthers played a fast paced first half as freshman Huck Pace scored the first goal for Rappahannock assisted by Gary White. Pace scored with a one touch shot into the upper comer of the net.
Rappahannock was able to keep the ball under their control, as the defenders stopped short the few break away attempts made by the Eagles.
A hard charge for the goal by Alex Ramey resulted in a penalty and a yellow card in the last part of the first half awarding the Clarke Eagles a penalty kick. The ball was blocked by Panther keeper Arne Utne, who leaped in the air, pushing up the ball that was headed for the top of the net. Utne swatted away another well aimed comer kick from Clarke County, allowing Rappahannock to breathe easy again. Utne blocked a total of 16 shots by Clarke County during the game.
During the second half a strong effort by the Eagles was once again dismantled by the Panther defense and mids as Rappahannock made a few break away charges for the Eagle’s goal. The Panthers had a total of 18 shots on the Eagle’s goal during the game.
Will Sonnet scored the second, and winning goal, with a diving header after Davy Torrence sent the ball in his direction. Sonnet’s game winning goal solidified their victory.
Clarke came back hard following the Panther's goal, however, their shots on the goal were all stopped by Utne, much to the delight of spectators.
