our studies and explorations on the themes of Habitats, Mysteries, Patterns, Baby Animals, Water Life, Cycles, and Metamorphosis. This year we will focus on “Nature Observation.” We will explore many different ways to observe living things intimately: how to walk quietly in the woods; painting and sketching; imagination; sitting quietly at our own special places; listening to animals; and attracting wildlife by providing food and nesting places.
The Rappahannock Nature Camp is meant to open the eyes of local children to the marvels of nature all around us, as another Nature Camp (at Vesuvius, Virginia) opened my eyes and sustained my interest many years ago. Without such an appreciation and sense of awe and wonder of our natural surroundings, concepts of “conservation” and “environment” acquired later in life will inevitably become abstract and self-centered.
The Rappahannock Nature Camp is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 12.
Our campers will explore the forests, meadows, rivers and ponds of the Singing Creek property and surrounding areas, including the Shenandoah National Park which is within walking distance. Camp will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.mm Monday - Friday, June 16 to June 27, with one overnight campout. Tuition is $225 for the two weeks.
