Two local painters — a familiar face and a fresh one — were selected from 124 applicants to show their work in the 2008 Mid-Atlantic Painting Exhibition at the University of Mary Washington.
For Sperryville’s Patton Wilson, 54, the honor could easily be lost in his long history of awards and showings. But for Eric Norman, a 2003 graduate of Rappahannock County High School and painter of two years, the distinction comes as a promise of what lies ahead.
Norman took it in with nonchalance. He said he did not consider himself a long shot for the exhibition, which was open to painters of all levels from Delaware, D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
“I was very grateful that it got in, though,” he said.
Norman is a senior at Mary Washington, where he is getting a major in studio art. He has racked up a departmental award for printmaking, an award for excellence in painting, two scholarships and a research grant for an independent study.
Now he is looking to graduate school, hoping to earn a master’s degree in painting and printmaking.
“That’s where I want to go next,” he said.
