Rappahannock County wants to put a new, taller emergency-communications antenna up next to the Sheriff's Office, on the Carrigan property, and has applied for a special use permit from the Town of Washington to do so

Consultants hired by the county to connect its emergency services to an 800megahertz system it shares with Fauquier and Culpeper counties, McCarthy said, have decided that a higher tower is the only solution to the degrading-signal problem, which can be caused by increased crowding of the airwaves.
The town issued a public notice for the newspaper at press time yesterday. It said the county will place a balloon 150feet high on Oct. 1 in the location of the proposed tower so that residents can see where it will rise.'An application for a permit for the tower will be submitted by the county to the town council at its regular meeting on Oct, 14.
McCarthy said the new lower is for the county's secondary emergencycommunications system used for pagers and intra-squad communications.
