Maazels’ Festival

In other action, the commission unanimously recommended a special exception amendment be granted to Playhouse Corporation, operators of the annual summer Castleton Festival for young classical musicians. The amended conditions of the exception would allow the festival to increase the number of attendees on site at any one time from 200 to 400. The festival was put on for the first time this July by Lonn and Dietlinde Maazel’s Chateauville Foundation and by all accounts was a resounding success.

The amended exception also explicitly permits festival organizers to erect “temporary' structures” such as the enormous tent where the festival’s largest concerts and operas were performed this year in a horse pasture off of Hope Hill Road.

There were no objections to the plan among commissioners, and only positive comments from a few members of the public Anne Pallie, who lives not far from Castleton Farms, called the first festival “wonderful,” and said she and her neighbors had “not one problem” with traffic along Route 729 and elsewhere during the length of the program.
