Folk Festival Presented
At Watergate June 4
Square dances, round dances, feather dances, and Irish jigs all will be performed by folk dancing groups at the International Folk Festival to be presnted by the Arlington Kiwanis Club at the Watergate on June fourth.
Among the groups to be seen will be the Lucky Run dancers, composed of Arlington Boy and Giri Scouts, dancers from Asheville, N. C., scene of the oldest folk festival in the United States, and a group of pretty Irish girls who will whirl and jig to the Irish Hornpipe.
The Festival, one of the few of its kind to be seen here, will begin about sundown, whjch will ba about 8:30 p. m. '
Prior to the start of the Festival, patrons will be entertained by a 80 minutes band concert.
Proceeds/from the Festival will be used by the Kiwanis jClub to establish a permanent summer camp for the Arlington Y. M. C. A. on 260 acres of land near Herndon, Virginia. The land was given to the “Y" last week by Lawrance Michael, Arlington realtor and protininent civic, leader, Kiwanis president! Colin Hamilton said.
In Addition to the Various folk dances and songs, some of them dating' back to the Sixteenth century, the Festival will present some of America’s best known ladio and recording “hillbilly" aitists.
These will include Pete Cassell, “America’s Blind Minstrel;” Connie B. Gay, and Don Patton and his mountaineer band.
It is also hoped that Burl Ires, Eddie Arnold, and others also will be here for the Festival.
Advance reservations can be made by writing to Box 44, Folk Festival, Arlington, Virginia, or by buying tickets from members of the Arlington Kiwanis Club. All youngsters under 12 will be admitted half price. Tickets are $200, |1.50, and |1.00, including tax.
