1875 Acres of Forest Lend
Burned in District
250 forest fires burned 1,875 acres of forest land this Spring in the sixteen counties cpmpris- - ing the Northern Piedmont District, which includes Rappahannock county, District Forester Dallas Wilfong stated this week. This number of fires and acreage burned includes the months of January through May 12. The month of April was an extremely dry month, making the conditions very hazardous for forest fires throughout the district. Not only was the month of April one of the driest months that has been ex- ' perienced over the past 10 years, but conditions were so that numerous forest fires burned during the warm months of January and February of this year. Over 60 forest fires occurred in the district during the months of Janaary and February, whereas in 1943 throughout Die same area there were only 8 forest fires during these two months.
Wilfong also stated that approximately 50 per cent of these flies were caused by brush burners. A large part of this brush burning was illegal and done before 4 p.m. Many of these brush
