burning fires resulted from people burning during the hours of 4 p.m. and midnight but failed to extinguish the fire and the fire escaped the next day. Other major causes for forest fires this Spring were smokers and incendiaries. There has been a noted increase in the number of fires intentionally set to woods this Spring and many of these fires are still being investigated. If any of the guilty people are found guilty of this violation, they face the maximum penalty o'* 3 years in the penitentiary.
Throughout the district. 125 persons were prosecuted for violation of the forest fire laws of Virginia. Of this number, 123 convictions were obtained and only 2 cases were acquitted.
The forest wardens organizations of.each county should be praised for their fine effort put fort this Spring, since due to the extreme high hazardous weather_ the average size fire throughout the district was decreased from 12 acrps^to 7 acres per fire.
The District Forester says that now that the Spring fire season can be considered over, the fulltime foresters working in the district will have more time to spend no timber management activities throughout the counties.
