Rise*, But Income Drape
Meat animal production in Virginia avowed almost a five percent increase in 1949'over 1948, but gross income dropped to $97,309,000 from the $110,729,000 level of the preceding year, says George Herring, Extension animal husbandman at VPI.
The increases in production came in cattle and calves. Hog, sheep, and lamb production stayed about the same. Of the 482,524,000 pounds of meat animals produced in Virginia in 1949, hogs accounted for 251,744,000 ponds, cattle and calves for 213,550,000 pounds, and sheep and lambs 17,230,000 pounds.
Cattle and calf income about .6 per cent, hog income 17 per cent, and sheep and lambs about 9 per cent.
Herring points oat that in the case of cattle and calves, and sheep and lambs, most of the gross income is cash. However, nearly half o the hogs are produced for /arm slaughter.
In the United States as a whole, meat production increased 7 per - cent in 1949 over 1943, and represented the first increase in the past 6 years. The production of cattle and calves, was t^e second largest on record, while that for hogs was fourth largest. Sheep and lamb production, however, was the smallest since 1923.
