Your photos, which you say capture all the excitement and variety of New York, wouldn’t stand a chance right now against the views I see each day. You see, sir, your skyscrapers give you no chance to see the mountains in purple-blue after a rain, and you may continue to gaze upon your magnificent structures of steel and glass—this morning I can look upon apple orchards coming into bloom.
Why didn’t you send me this attractive card during the winter months, (when the world was more drab in appearance? I'm sorry, sir, but right now, with Rappahannock county around me as beautiful as it is, I find I can’t work up much enthusiasm for your city excitement.

With a circus coming into the county for the first time in many years, sortie of the local folks got to reminiscing about the olden days when the arrival of the circus was a gala day. One fellow remembers hearing about the mighty Barnum being in Rappahannock.
The circus played a stop-over between Front Royal and Culpeper, and word spread throughout the hills and hollows about the big circus.
One Rappahannock native arrived already fortified with sufficient spirits to guarantee a pleasant evening. He walked up toxthe tiger cage. He’d never seen a tiger before.
“Nice kitty, come-’ere, kitty,” he greeted the caged animal.
Everything would have been fine, but some of the circus men tried to get the fellow away from the cage with the “nice kitty” in it. He objected.
The whole story wound up on a free-for-all fight, between the circus men and the local talent. About 30 got locked up in the jail at Washington (no partiality shown, circus men and local voters alike) and the great Barnum’s circus had to borrow money to get the crew bailed out, so they could continue their travels to“neighbor
