Three-quarters of a century ago a young inventor, working with his assistant in an attic - laboratory in Boston, Massachusetts uttered seven words into a crude transmitter and in that instant the teletftione was born.
That young inventor was Alexander Graham Bell who early in the 1870’s conceived the idea that if he could generate an electrical current that would vary in intensity as the air varies in density when a sound is passing through it he could transmit spoken words by wire. Working on that theory, Bell succeeded in transforming his idea into a reality—the telephone— a conveyor of speech by wires.
Despite1 the fact that on March 10, 1876, Bell’s instrument was the only speaking telephone in al) the universe capable of transmitting one sentence a distance of only 40 feet in one-direction, the scientist •had great faith in his invention and prophesied a useful future for it It is doubtful, however, that even Bell could foresee, 75 years ago, that the telephone would transform the whole pattern of living in the United States and to some extent in the world at large. ^
