Open ditches constructed according to specifications are more easily maintained and arenvore— effective in draining the land. Farmers constructing such ditches may be reimbursed at the rate of 12c per cubic yard for dirt moved not to exceed $100.00.
Soil Conservation Service technicians working in co-operation with the Culpeper Soil Conservation District assist farmers in locating their ditch lines and outline tne specifications for the particular conditions. Technicians also assist farmers in determining the type of equipment that is best suited for accomplishing the work. Heavy equipment for moving dirt may be rented from local contractors who are experienced in the' various conservation jobs. _
Bernard Inskeep, dairyman, Rapidan; J. Carlton Clore and Clyde Deaver, beef cattleman and,' dairyman respectively, both located near Culpeper, have added to their network of open ditches this spring. '‘Land that was wet last summer is noiw growing excellent Ladino Clover and Orchard grass pasture,” says Clyde Weaver. Twenty-six additional landowners have requested assistance in farm drainage from Soil Conservation technicians so far this year.
