Safety Program
The State Highway Department’s employe safety program has won a top award from the National Safety Council.
Melvin G. Lyell, the Department’s safety engineer, said today the Council has selected the agency for its award of honor — the fifth time it’s been given to the State’shighiway organization.
The awards are based on the [frequency and severity of on; the-job injuries. The Depart [ment’s frequency rate for 1966 [was 4.44, which means that [there were that many injuries jfor each million man hours of iwork. Lyell said the rate was [ believed to be the lowest for | any state highway agency in the [ nation. j The severity rating, 373. [ represents the time lost be[ cause of injuries, and was 79 iper cent better than that for ! state highway departments in general, Lyell said. | The Department’s employe safety program began 30years ago and.involves the efforts of hundreds of supervisors and some 7,500 other employes throughout the State.
