Electrician’s Mate First Class Kermit C. Wallace; USN son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence M . Wallace of Woodville, Va. is serving aboard the landing craft repair ship USS Askari, while operating as a unit of River Assault Flotilla One in Vietnam.
Flotilla One is operating with the U. S. Army's 9th Infantry Division. Their primary mission is to keep the main shipping channels to Saigon clear and to move troops and supplies into operational areas of the swampy delta areas known to Vietnamese as%the Forest of the Assassins.
Crewmembers of the Askari have the difficult job of outfitting, maintaining, and keeping operational the various types of small, heavily-armo* ed gunboats used in this operation.
With U. S. Combat Air Forces in the Western Pacific Temple E. Ficklin, son of George W. Ficklin of R. F. D. 1, Amissville, Va., has been promoted to staff sergeant in the~U. S. Air Force. Sergeant Ficklin is now on duty with the 4252nd Strategic Wing at a forward base in the Western Pacific. He was assigned at Otis AFQ Mass., before arriving in the Pacific to help provide direct support for U. S. Air Force operations in Southeast Asia. The sergeant, a Strategic Air Command communications specialist, supports KC 135 Strato Tanker aircrews who daily provide aerial refueling to B-52 bombers, figh ter-bombers and reconnaissance aircraft conducting the ;air war over Vietnam. ] Sergeant Ficklin is a 1953 graduate of George Washington Carver High School, Rapi|dan, Va. His wife, Christiana, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus L. Banks of Culpeper, Va.
