THEN BEGAN a discussion of specific fees, with the different price charges for male and female dogs noted. Commenting on the need for more revenue, Mrs. Coates said, “We’d better pray we’ve got more female dogs.”
“Maybe we’d better start a Lib movement for female dogs,” grinned Davis, going on to describe how a stray “somebody threw out” had a litter of seven dogs, “under my front porch.”
The discussion wandered again. “There’s more dog food sold in the country than baby food,” said Davis.
“Maybe we could put a tax on dog food,” said Wood.
“Maybe we could start cat tags,” said Mrs. Coates.
If something isn’t done, both Wood and Foster agreed, “it’ll just be open season on every dog that comes on a man’s property. . .if you do away with the dog warden.”
“A man who keeps sheep will try to kill dogs, anyway,” Foster thought.
Miller foresaw a situation developing in Rappahannock where the county would wind up with “a shotgun and shovel policy.”
