root system before the ground freezes. The planting should be completed not later than two or three weeks after the average first fall frost date in your area.
Do not use fertilizer in the hole or furrow when the hole or furrow when planting bulbs. It will burn the young roots. To promote vigorous growth, mix four pounds of 5-10-5 fertilizer with the soil in each 100 square feet of bed, or two pounds with each 25 feet of row. Be sure to mix this thoroughly with the soil. After planting apply half the above amount on top of the ground and rake it into the surface soil.
Buy only high quality bulbs from a reliable source. Cheap bulbs may be of poor quality and inferior varieties. Small bulbs produce small blooms. High quality U.S. bulbs are just as good as those from foreign sources.
Daffodils are probably the most useful and dependable of spring flowering bulbs. Varieties are available which range in height from about four to 20 inches. Some of the dwarf daffodils may be used like crocus, in shrub or border planting. The taller varieties may be used for mass display in beds, naturalizing or for cut flowers in the home.
