Most of the animals, even those from tropical habitat, can adapt to living in the Virginia climate, Slaughter said. The problem with animals that have come from warmer areas is that they breed all year round. Slaughter and the zoo staff have to be sure that breeding is timed so that the young will be born during milder weather.
