PESTICIDE APPLICATOR CERTIFICATION—Plans are being developed now for fall and winter schools to help private and commercial applicators of “restricted-use” pesticides prepare for meeting certification. A restricted-use pesticide is any pesticide that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers harmful to man or the environment if applied carelessly. The EPA list of “restricted-use” pesticides is currently incomplete. But for every major crop grown in Virginia there will probably be at least one recommended pesticide classified as “restricted use.”
To be on the safe side all pesticide applicators should become certified. This would include all custom applicators, most commercial orchardist and many farmers.
Federal and state laws requiring certification of private and commercial uses of “restricted-use” pesticides becomes effective October 1976, under provisions of the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act and under an amendment to the Virginia pesticide law.
The schools for private and commercial pesticide applicators will be conducted by the V.P.I. Extension Service in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce, which is the certifying agency. L . .. . „
A one-day school for private applicators will be held in Kappahannock County, while a two-day school for commercial applicators will be conducted on an area basis.
A fact sheet on the pesticide training and certification program will be mailed to most farmers and known commercial applicators in the county next Monday, August 4. Enclosed with the fact sheet will be a return post card. Please indicate on the post card whether you would like a private or commercial license and if you want to attend the school or prepare through self study. Please return the post card promptly. If you have not received the fact sheet by August 11, please call your Extension Office, 675-3619.□
